Cadence
Calculator

Pace and stride length into steps per minute, or pace and cadence into stride.

Last reviewed 25 August 2026

At 5:00/km with a 1.111 m stride you take about 180 steps per minute. Enter pace plus stride, or pace plus cadence. Get the missing number. Exact arithmetic. There is no universal 180 spm target.

What this result means

Running cadence is steps per minute counting both feet. Speed equals cadence times stride length. This page solves that identity. It does not guess stride from height.

Use it when your watch reports cadence and you want stride, or when you measured stride and want steps per minute. Steps-per-kilometre and total-steps pages share the same math with different headlines.

5:00/km is 3.333 m/s. At 180 spm, stride is 1.111 m and you take 900 steps per kilometre. At 170 spm the stride is longer for the same pace.

6:00/km at 1.00 m stride is 167 spm. Change one input; the identity fills the rest.

Calculation method

stride_m = speed_m_s ÷ (cadence_spm ÷ 60). cadence_spm = speed_m_s ÷ stride_m × 60. Speed comes from pace: 1000 m ÷ seconds per kilometre.

Exact arithmetic. No form coaching and no population target.

Watch cadence algorithms differ. Overstriding diagnoses are coaching judgements, not outputs of this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is 180 steps per minute the correct cadence?

No universal target is claimed here. 180 is a common example number, not a prescription.

Does this use height?

No. Height-based stride guesses are not invented on this site.

What is a step versus a stride?

Here cadence counts steps (both feet). Stride length is metres per step in that same counting convention.

Can I get steps for a whole run?

Open the total steps calculator with distance plus stride, or pace and cadence.
